Linoleum prints on heavy cartridge paper

15cm x 10cm

The figurative images are inspired by Frans Masereel’s (1889-1972) Landschaften und Stimmungen: 60 Holzschnitte 1929 and consists of three separate representations of Indian nightlife. All three lino-prints are printed in Mars Black ink with exposure to negative spaces and are inspired by photographs shot in Bangalore India by the artist. The Old Tailor depicts an elderly man in the process of sewing late at night, acknowledging the struggles of the working-class members of India. The second print titled, Toit is set within a family pub and focuses on the various social interactions that occur during the night time. The third print, The Toit Brewery exposes the industrial process of brewing traditional and popular Bangalore rice beer. This series serves a Social Function and confronts the viewer about the diversity of interactions and functions of people who work at night, in contrast to many who have a social pastime during this time. My photographs were taken on the same night within the span of an hour which communicates the versatility of occurrences which can happen within the same night.
